1990′s
1990 Jackson trial attorney Gerry Spence appears in “Ghosts Can’t Do It” with Anthony Quinn at the end of his careers. Bo Derek stars in this soft core porn yarn.
1997 Hells Half Acre between Shoshoni and Casper is the site for some of the battle scenes in “Starship Troopers.”
Really sad that this is all we have to show for “filmed in Wyoming” in an entire 10-year-span. Or is it 20 years now? Sheesh. Get your act together, film commission!

The movie making playing field has been leveled. Back in the day, Wyoming had beauty unrivaled that also had amenities nearby, like in Jackson. These days, Canada has taken much of the business shot in the mountains because of subsidies and tax breaks. Other places in the west, particularly New Mexico, basically buy the business away with incentives and tax breaks. In Wyoming, oil, gas, and coal are still king. Wyoming offers a few incentives, but doesn’t give away the farm like they do in NM, Michigan and Louisiana.
The other problem in Wyoming is the lack of infrastructure. There are a few larger production companies in Jackson and that’s about it. Lately, like what we’ve been trying to do in Cheyenne, there are efforts to raise awareness as to the economic development potential of film and digital media.
The Cheyenne International Film Festival works closely with the state film office and they are doing the best they can given the few resources it is given.
